IRCTC Plans for Senior Citizen

The Indian Railway Catering andTourism Corporation (IRCTC) has decided to set up an executive lounge at major stations across the country to assist the passengers, particularlysenior citizens and women, in boarding trains in a hassle-free manner.

According to a Railway Board official, under the plan, the lounge will serve the passengers right from receiving them at stations and arranging porters for luggage carriage. The trained staff of the lounge, who will be known as 'rail volunteers', will be available to serve passengers on payment basis round-the-clock at all crowded stations where such lounge would be set up in future, he said.

According to an IRCTC official, the railways has decided to provide same facility to passengers as is being given at airports. The concept of an executive lounge is very much on the pattern of airport lounge. In addition to proper seats, food and beverage will be made available at the lounge. Wheel chairs will be available at each lounge to cater to the needs of elderly people, physically challenged persons and women, he said.

The greatest advantage of the lounge will be facility of Wi-Fi for the passengers in any emergency. It will also be provided with business centre facilities, including fax, laptop, locker for luggage and wash room. According to the IRCTC official, passengers will have to book executive lounge in advance so that Rail Volunteers could be present on time to receive them on platform of the station. Besides, the lounge will have travel-desk facility for passengers to book hotel, cab, ticket for their onward journey, he said.

Keeping in mind the visit of a large number foreign tourists every year and their preference to travel by trains, the lounge will also deal in foreign exchange so that these foreign tourists do not face any difficulty while undertaking journey by the railways in the country, the IRCTC official said, adding that the lounge would be available to passengers belonging to each class after paying a certain fee to the volunteers.
