Traveling by train in India has its own lure and fascination. It also proves to be cost-effective. A great number of trains cover almost every nook and corner of this vast country.  Indian Railways has come a long way since its origin. Laid down by the Britishers for transshipment of goods, the railway mode was then used to transport people too. At present, it has received international prominence of operating one of the worlds largest railway network. Indian Railways network operates busiest trains and serves almost 13 million passengers per day. The finest part is that it reaches the most secluded corner of Indian isthmus where airways and bus services don’t have an influence yet. Indian rail tickets are so reasonable that you can book tickets online for a 1st class or AC Tier luxury car on Indian trains for a small family for less than 5000 rupees.

With 3,651 kilometers in narrow gauge, 18,529 kilometers in meter gauge, and 86,526 track kilometers in broad gauge, Indian Railways becomes the largest rail network in Asia. Today the govt. organization has 9000 locomotives, 60,000 coaching vehicles, 230,000 freight wagons, 7,083 stations, 600 yards, 4700 goods sheds, 900 repair shops, and over 1.6 million employees. Indian Railways runs around 14,000 trains everyday, of which 9,000 are passenger trains. No wonder, it has been deemed the worlds second largest ‘under one management’!

Rail tourism has seen a meteoric rise. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Palace on Wheels, Samjhauta Express, Lifeline Express, Fairy Queen, Himsagar Express, Deccan Queen,  Heritage on Wheels are some of the trains that reckon tourists with the countrys beauty. These are run by IRCTC. Among these, Fairy Queen, the oldest running steam engine has bagged Heritage Award at the international Tourist Award apart from finding a place in Guinness Book of World Records. Guests from all over India and the world foster these trains for bringing earnings in foreign exchange.

IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation) has lately emerged as a fundamental part of Indian Railways. This division takes care of food catering, sightseeing and online train reservation necessities of passengers. For the ease of customers queries related to seat availability, PNR status, time table, etc. can all be addressed online from the IRCTC website.
